Habitat for Humanity
by Joey Davis Almost any man worthy of his salt would fight to defend his home, but no one ever heard of a man going to war for his boarding house." Mark Twain We turn on the hot water and it's always there. We allow our children to go outside and play in our backyards and feel assured that they are safe. Our neighbors can't and don't listen to our conversations through our walls We are blessed to live in houses that by the grace of God have been transformed into homes. . . not everyone is so blessed.
There are many people within a ten mile radius of our church building who want to be home owners. The dream of a home where the roof doesn't leak, where the hot water works, where their children can be safe, and where they can take pride in the ownership of the American dream.
These people are willing to work in order to achieve the dream. They just need help getting over the hump And getting them over the hump is what a group known as Habitat for Humanity does.
Habitat of Wilson County has already helped several families build and own homes in our community. They accomplish this in a very unique way. They depend on the love and support of kind hearted people.
Here's how it works. A person who desires to have a Habitat sponsored home must apply with Habitat of Wilson County. They must show that their living conditions are less than substandard and that they desire to work in order to own their home. They must invest at least 350 hours in working on homes for others and must have 500 hours of combined and donated work to their credit. This serves as their down payment. Then they must pay closing costs and keep up with the payments on their house which are figured on a 20-year / 0% interest note.
Having been involved in a Habitat house before, I know the blessing received tram seeing someone who not only dreamed of building a home, but worked diligently to make it possible, walk in their own front door for the first time You can experience this feeling too.
There is a new Habitat Home being built in our community. It is located on Curd Road, just past Curd Road Church of Christ. Bobby Cole is working on this project and needs your help. The foundation is being laid this weekend. He needs experienced trainers on the weekend of the 12th. No matter what your skill level, Bobby will be able to find a way for you to receive a blessing by helping Call him at 758-7548 and he'll put you to work! "...to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me."
