His Star
by Joey Davis His birth was a well kept secret of God whispered only amongst the stars.
Only a handful of people even cupped their ears to listen. And they were not from Palestine, but from Persia. They were not Jews, but Gentiles the uncircumcision the unclean. The secret of the star was whispered to those who were without hope in this world.
Odd that the revelation of a Jewish Messiah was heard only by foreigners. Astrologers of all people. Odd that it was not heard by a Priest or Rabbi or a member of the Sanhederin. Odd that the messenger was of all things not a prophet, but a star. And only a star; not a meteor shower or a comet, but a star hung quietly in the night among a million others.
It could not possibly have been as spectacular as some have suggested. If that were the case, millions would have noticed and wondered about it and its significance. No, it could not have been spectacular. Yet, something about this star captured the attention of these Easterners. Something out it told them that it was "His" star.
Maybe it's because of the unexpected way it rose in the western sky. Or maybe while pouring over their charts they uncovered the oracle of Baalam, one of their own countrymen, that explained the mysterious light. . . "A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel."
Whatever it was, the Spirit of God spoke to them through this hushed revelation and beckoned them to follow.
They traveled by night when the star was most visible, their long shadows lagging behind their even longer caravan. They traveled in search of a king, not knowing where the path would lead, or what they might find, or what would happen to them on the way, or even how their lives would be changed by what they found. They used what little light was given them to search for a promise that was shrouded in mystery.
In a thick Persian dialect they startled the family of Joseph by saying, "we saw His star in the east and we have come to worship Him."
What secret was God keeping with this child? A secret so terrifying it could scarcely be uttered without causing the heavens to tremble and the stars to fall from the sky.
The secret? On that starlit night in Bethlehem, God came to earth to do the one thing He couldn't do in heaven. . . die. Matthew 2
