A Book by Its Cover

by Joey Davis

You can't tell a book by its cover. That old adage is still true today. Take for example, the United States.

We are considered a well - educated nation. Yet, if you tally the facts, you may come to a different conclusion:

"Only one-fifth of High School students tested by Gallup researchers could find the United States on a world map. "One-third did not know that Mexico borders Texas. "What were the last two states admitted to the Union? The majority answered either Florida, Canada, or Mexico. "What language is mostly spoken in Latin America? "Latin."

In spite of these glaring facts we still remain one of the most powerful countries in the world. But will we remain that way?

A story is told of a bible school teacher who was new to a particular church. He walked into class the first day and asked. "who tore down the walls of Jericho?"

One of the young men in class said. "don't look at me. I didn't do it this time!" Another chimed in, "it's true Mister, he was with me all night last night."

Frustrated, the bible school teacher took the boys to the teacher who taught before he arrived. He sternly said, "what kind of students are these? I asked who tore down the walls of Jericho and they said 'not me'!" To this the past teacher meekly said. "they're pretty good boys and they always tell the truth. I don't think they'd do such a thing. Got any proof?"

Completely frustrated. the teacher took the boys to the education committee and recapped the entire story of their claims to have been innocent of destroying the walls of Jericho. The committee had a brief conference and then replied. "we really don't think they did it either. but in order to keep harmony in the community. we'll be glad to pay for the damages."

We are seen as a bible centered people. The good news is that we are. But, if we do not educate the next generations, can we be assured that we will always be known this way? Knowing the bible begins at home ( Ephesians 6:4). It continues in the classrooms at church. Work with our bible school teachers to make learning the Bible a top priority for your family for the sake of generations to come!
