The Treasure House of God's Word
by Joey Davis I am often amazed how true wisdom is ageless and timeless. I am also amazed at the places it can be found.
Recently, Sister Olga Edge sent some of her personal library to us in order to assure it would be I shared. As we went through her books, we found many useful topics and are grateful I for her desire to be a good steward of her blessings.
While going through an old bible, I found several interesting pieces. There was an old sympathy card from 1968 tucked away in the pages. An old church bulletin was I also hidden in the volume. And when I got to the back of I the bible, a worn and tattered sheet of paper fell out of the binding. The type written note enclosed was both poignant I and timeless. It read. . .The Treasure House of God's Word.
This book contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers.
Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true, and its decisions are immutable.
Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe, and practice it to be holy. It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you. It is the traveler's staff, the pilot's compass, the soldier's sword, and the Christian's charter.
Here paradise is restored. heaven opened, and the gates of hell disclosed. Christ is its grand object, our good its design, and the glory of God its end.
It should fill the memory, rule the heart, and guide the
feet. Read it slowly, frequently, and prayerfully. It is a mine of wealth, a paradise of glory, and a river of pleasure.
It is given you in life, will be opened in the judgement, and be remembered forever.
It involves the highest responsibility, will reward the greatest labor, and will condemn all who trifle with its sacred contents. What a wonderful reminder of the soberness with which the word of God should be handled. With so many bibles in so many homes, we often forget what a powerful and employable tool God has entrusted to our care.
Somehow, I felt these faded words on this yellowed paper might be useful to some of you as well. And Mrs. Edge, if you are reading this, you should know that this old piece of paper is now in the binding of my bible. Thanks!
