He had long hair and a dangling earring. He had backed his car right in front of mine and parked, and now he was coming toward me! What would I do now? (My car could not get around him!) Here is what I did -- I let him go to get gas for me.
Headed to my first class at T.S.U., I had not checked my fuel gauge. Feeling my car hesitate, I took the I-440-40W ramp hoping to coast near a gas station. Bad choice! The ramp was too steep and long. In a hopeless situation, I knew I would not be on time for class.
Hundreds of vehicles had passed me by, though I had raised my hood to signal a need for help. The young man who stopped went to get gas called the school to give notice that I would be late. He tried to refuse any money after making a long circuit to get back to me. He finally accepted a small sum.
The "milk of human kindness" does not always come in "fancy cups." I definitely would try to discourage Christian men from wearing long hair and earrings. Such would hurt our influence. But in the heart of many who do not share our lifestyle are feelings of compassion and helpfulness. Would I have stopped if this man had been stranded? Now read Luke 10:25ff.
