Why Do You Believe What You Believe?

by Steve Hale

Why do you believe in the reserrection? Why do you accept the plan of salvation? Why do you believe instrumental music in worship is wrong? What are the five items of worship, and why do we practice them and them alone when we come together on the Lord's Day?

Why do you believe what you believe? That is a very important question! We should never accept something or believe something without examination and evidence! It should not be the result of tradition or something we have always done! It should be as a result of our study into the word of God!

A church is definitely reflected by the biblical knowledge of her members. What daily study plan do you have? Do you read the Bible everyday? Can you tell your youngsters the books of the New Testament? How about the Old Testament? Do you know who the Lord's apostles were?

We must not degenerate to a people who simply accept what preachers and elders tell them. We should want to hear directly from the King! The Bible is your means to hear from Him yourself!

For years, our Restoration Movement has cried out against letting men dictate religion. We have avered that man-made creeds, rules, and rulers should not be in Christianity. And, a noble please it has been! Are we not, in a practical sense, throwing such a plea out the window when we neglect studying the word so we can know for ourselves?

New Testament Christians are all priests ( 1 Peter 2:5)! These priests are charged to know the words of the Savior and His inspired writers ( 1 Timothy 4:16). This study should involve both of the Testaments ( Romans 15:4; Matthew 5:17-18). If you do not believe this, let me make this challenge to you.

Go through the book of Hebrews and mark out every Old Testament quotation. Now, read Hebrews and try to understand it without that information. T his process will cause your reading to be brief, and your understanding dim! The evidence of His Messiahship by fulfilled prophecy will be removed! How we need to study all the Bible!
