It's Nearly Here!by Steve Hale "Luke the beloved physician and Demas greet you" ( Colossians 4:14, NKJV). It's nearly here...school! For children bored from the lack of physical and intellectual activity, it is a welcome sight. Reunions, challenges, new friends, and great learning are on the horizon. For parents, it's a time to get to a more disciplined schedule and routine. As we start a new school year, let me suggest we take a few additional things to school with us, besides the notebooks, pencils, scissors, and lunchboxes: 1. Optimism -- Christians should be optimistic and happy! People are more drawn to honey than vinegar. Have the victorious, happy disposition of a Christian ( Philippians 4:4). 2. Values -- Don't surrender those wonderful Christian values you've learned at home and in the Bible school. The Golden Rule, going the Second Mile, and righteousness are like salt and light to a dying world ( Matthew 5:13-16). 3. Exercise -- While bodily exercise profits a little, spiritual exercise brings great profit ( I Timothy 4:8). Paul calls this spiritual exercise "godliness." Our friends will listen to little else we say about the Lord unless we "walk the taLuke" 4. Resolve -- Resolve that you will make this the best school year you possibly can. Work vigorously at your homework. Jesus grew "...in stature and wisdom, and in favor with God and man" ( Luke 2:52). Resolve to grow like Jesus did. When this school year is over, Lord willing, see how you did! O-V-E-R...optimism, values, exercise, and resolve are wonderful things to take with you. This shows you are not alone, that you brought Jesus along with you ( Matthew 28:20). When you leave the car or the bus, does Jesus go to school with you? Why or why not? Start o-v-e-r right now!
