Good, Better, Best

"Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy--meditate on these things" ( Philippians 4:8, NKJV).

Do you remember the old Sears and Roebuck Catalogues? Advertisements could be found for nearly any item, from tools, to lawn tractors, to tires, to appliances, and nearly any other item. Ads would often list products in three categories, with accelerated prices for the better items. The ads would picture three of the same kind of items in a row, and would say: "Good," "Better," and "Best."

As we try to grow in the faith, and concentrate onthings true, noble, just, pure, lovely, of good report, let's take a few minutes to borrow this exercise of Sears and Roebuck. What are things that are good, better, and best?

Scenario 1:
A brother in Christ is trying to get his hay in before it rains. A storm is brewing for Sunday night, and so he says he'll probably miss Sunday evening services. What would say to him?
Good: "I know some high school boys you could hire. Maybe with enough help, you can get you hay in in time."
Better: "I have a giant spool bailer. Maybe you could borrow it, wrap the hay, and come on to services.
Best: "Brother, we'll be down this afternoon to help you. Maybe if we all work together, we'll get this done for you, and still make it to the evening worship services."

Scenario 2:
Missionaries are coming to the congregation to make a report. They've been out in the field for sometime, this is their first taste of American prosperity in a while. The report has ended, and you are searching for something to say to them as you leave.
Good: "We really appreciate the sacrificial work you folks are doing. Remember, we're praying for you."
Better: "What a great work you are doing! Could we have you address, so we could write you, and so our children could write your children?"
Best: "If you have the time, what don't you folks come over to our house one night? We would enjoy the fellowship, could tell you what's gone in America since you left, and you could tell us more. We would like to be your partners in the work from America."

Brothers and sisters, there's nothing wrong with doing things that are "good." Nor is there anything wrong with doing things that are "better." But, let us strive to become personally involved in people's lives, as well as offer prayer and encouragement. Let us graduate to offer the very "best" in God's service!
