Wisdom

by Tim Martin

Looking back over the 11 years since I was baptized, I am reminded of several people who greatly influenced my growth as a man, a husband, a father and a believer. They all share a common characteristic: They were older, wiser and more spiritually mature than I. It was a blessing from the Lord to be involved in a Wednesday night class a few years ago that was full of people that fit that description. I was a babe in Christ and often spoke before thinking. The wise folks in that class, men and women, helped me realize how little I knew while showing me how I needed to learn. Their example and teaching will follow me all of my days. I would not be where I am now in my studies and walk without that influence. There are some saints from that class which, even though they have left this world, their examples remain an influence on me. I still have a lot more to learn and need mature Christians for mentorship.
Some saints may not realize that younger folks are watching them. They shepherd by how they parent, grandparent, love their spouse, study the Bible, serve in ministry and remain faithful in attendance. I have seen a husband taking care of his wife, even when her physical limitations hindered her in getting dressed for church. This husband made sure she made it to worship, getting her ready himself. The teacher of that class on Wednesday night has shown me how a man can remain committed to God and family even after making mistakes and suffering for them.
There are great opportunities here for younger members to learn from the example of ones who have already walked many of the paths of life. Young Christians, like babies, must learn how to walk and run. They must be taught by example, encouragement, and sometimes by having their hand held. Two of our classes come to mind that offer great opportunities. The Soul Focus class meets on Sunday morning in L1AB. This class has room for growth and is a group where discussion is encouraged. James Beckham and Bob Schmitt lead that class. Wednesday night features David Fleming's class on the times of the Biblical kings in room 201AB. David has a passion for Biblical history and serves up spiritual wisdom gained from the examples in these stories. It is a class not only to learn history, but also wisdom God wants us to gain from the Scriptures He inspired.
I encourage some of you to get engaged in these opportunities. If you have been asking God for wisdom, these classes may be Him providing it generously ( James 1:5).
