Phil-osophy

Hello everyone.

Since I'm kind of new around here I thought I'd take a minute to tell you a little bit about myself, while sparing you the "I-enjoy-long-walks-on-the-beachy" details.

My name is Philip Jenkins and I am the new youth minister at Mt. Juliet church of Christ. I'm twenty-five years old and I have an amazing wife, named Laura. We've been married for four years. I am a Freed-Hardeman University graduate (2006), and over the past few years we have been blessed to work with the Millview church of Christ in Franklin, Tennessee and the Savannah church of Christ in Savannah, Tennessee.

I guess I used several words there, but what if you only had one word? If you had to choose one word that you would use to describe yourself, what would it be? (And if you really want to make things interesting, ask someone else to choose a word describing you!)

Chew on that one for a minute...Would you say tall? Short? Kind? Thoughtful? Rich? Blonde (no jokes please)? Smart? Skinny? Handsome or beautiful? Athlete? Kid? Parent? Husband? Wife?

It's tough, but I think if I had to pick one word, it's probably a word that most of you would choose, too. The word is "blessed." No doubt you've seen this before, but it still makes an impression on me.
If we could shrink the earth's population to a village of precisely 100 people, with all the existing human ratios remaining the same: Six people would possess 59% of the entire world's wealth and all six would be from the United States. 80 would live in substandard housing. 70 would be unable to read. 50 would suffer from malnutrition. One would be near death - one would be near birth. One would have a college education. One would own a computer.

We are a blessed people, and even in tough times God keeps the blessings coming.

I was talking to Laura this past week and I asked her what impressed her the most about the congregation after being here for one week. After thinking it over for a moment she said, "It was the 1 John 3:16 contribution," a special contribution set up to take care of our Christian brothers and sisters in the Mt. Juliet congregation who are going through hard times.

1 John 3:16 says, "This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers." This past Sunday morning, over $30,000 was collected for the 1 John 3:16 Ministry. Wow!

We truly are a blessed people, and as Jesus Himself said, "For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required" ( Luke 12:48).

I feel blessed to have only been here one week and see that this is a church of God's people who truly cares for one another, not just in word but in deed.

Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead ( James 2:15-17).
