Take Up Your Cross

by Phil Waggoner

In Luke 8:23, Jesus said, "If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me."
This past week, there were several Mt. Juliet folks who discovered the true meaning of discipleship. These brothers and sisters became true servants of God as they scrubbed heads for lice, gave water to the thirsty, medical help to the poor, and love to the down-trodden. It is truly a blessing to be part of a congregation that sees the importance of taking the gospel not only to one's backyard but to a lost and dying world in Central America.
Team Mt. Juliet worked wonderfully together again. It is wonderful to have excellent leaders like Buddy Pickler, P.D.McCulloch, Greg Myers, Dennis Buchanan, and Bill Staggs, veterans who know what it takes to plan a successful trip.
It was also wonderful for the elders to allow some of our teens to participate. John Michael Kennedy, Rachel McCulloch, and Robert Schmitt worked as hard as anybody and had great attitudes. It is a blessing to be a part of a team that works like a family, where one's age does not matter. Everyone pitched in and the results showed.
To look into the eyes of someone dying to know about Jesus should truly encourage us to be more zealous for Christ. Sometimes many get caught up in things going on around them. If one will only open his eyes, he will see many around him who are lost and need to hear the Gospel. Let us deny ourselves, take up our cross daily, and follow Christ.
