The Banner of Our LordStand for it; Under it; and Pass it on
The banner over soldiers is an ancient ideal whose usage identifies loyalty. The Psalmist explains the banner of truth is lifted for those loyal to God to know where to gather in order to be delivered ( Psalm 60:4-5 ). The young Shulamite woman declared her haven under which she chose to live with the love of her life was a banner of love ( Song of Solomon 2:4 ). Isaiah was told to assemble the Lord's army on a high mountain under a banner! Those under this banner identified themselves as willing fighters for the Lord! Let's summarize the purpose of banners in the scriptures. The Lord's banner is a banner of TRUTH attracting those who are committed to truth above all else. The Lord's banner is a banner of LOVE attracting those who are loyal to God with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength. The Lord's banner is a banner lifted above SOLDIERS attracting those whose loyalty for the truth and love for the Lord would cause them to sacrifice their life for their commander! "And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also ( 2 Timothy 2:2 )." Once we live under the banner of God, to die without passing it on or "committing it to faithful men", would be a terrible mistake! Paul lived and fought under the Lord's banner and then passed it on to Timothy and others! May 4, 2003 |
