Mt. Juliet Messenger
Preparing for Worship
by Albert England

While a student at Lipscomb University, I recall Brother Carroll Ellis making the statement that Christians should prepare themselves for worship. By this he meant that the physical body should be rested and the mind alert in order to give God our best in worship. One who is tired, sleepy, and worn out from the activities of the weekend is not prepared to worship. We understand the importance of our teachers and preachers being prepared for their tasks. It is also important for each of us to be mentally and physically alert and fit for worship. We should also consider our children from this standpoint.
Possibly one of the greatest hindrances to our worship is focusing our mind. This is a problem for young and old. There are many things and activities in our lives that can distract us unless we are properly motivated to concentrate. A recognition of Gods greatness and our daily dependence on Him will help us worship Him in Spirit and truth ( John 4:24). It is possible to go through a form of worship without being pleasing to God. Our relationship with God is very important. It is also necessary to have the proper relationship with our fellowman ( Matthew 18:15-17).
Sometimes we may blame others (preacher, teacher, song leader, etc.) for the quality of our worship; however we must first look to our heart and allow God to refine it for worship to Him as He intends.
Today, we tend to look to external things to enhance our worship. The true quality of our worship, however, rests within us. If we have not allowed God to purify us, first, our worship will be void of His presence. If we do not have a pure heart, we may give offerings, but they will be unacceptable to God. Attending a religious service will not automatically ensure an encounter with God. from the book Experiencing God Day by Day.
True worship to God is to be a continual process. Therefore by Him (Christ) let us continually offer the sacrifice praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name. But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. Hebrews 13:15-16.
