The Role of a Christian in Government

by Tony Huddleston

As the 2006 mid-term elections approach, and important issues are raised affecting our state and our country, it is reasonable for a Christian to ask; Is it appropriate for me to take an active role in government?

Lets examine the scriptures. In Pauls letter to the Romans, he outlines the function of government, and what our attitude should be toward it. The text does not specify the type of government, so it may be assumed all types are equally applicable. Of course, we know the government of Rome was definitely not a democracy, but a monarchy headed by Caesar.

Regardless of the type of government, or who our rulers may be, we owe them respect. Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. Romans 13:1. Jesus also taught this principle. On the subject of whether we should pay taxes, these were his words: And He said to them, "Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." ( Luke 20:25).

Paul made it very clear we were not to resist or be hostile to the government. ( Romans 13:2).

However, Paul was not implying we should never break the law. Paul and the other apostles continued to preach the gospel even though they were threatened with death. Whenever the government makes a law which violates Gods law, we must obey God rather than men. ( Acts 5:29).

It is certainly in keeping with Pauls admonition concerning respect of civil government to take advantage of any liberties the law provides, most notably in America, the freedom to vote. As we have opportunity to fight sin or promote righteousness through participation in government, we have the freedom and the responsibility to do so.
