Do This in Remembrance of Me

by Pat Hackney

Eating the Lords Supper is a very important part of worship that each Christian does on every first day of the week ( Acts 20:7). Not only are we to partake of it; but, we are to partake of it in a worthy manner. The New Testament teaches: Whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord ( 1 Corinthians 11:27).
Sometimes it has been difficult for me to concentrate while partaking of the Lords Supper. What I have learned to do is use the numbers one through seven. Each of these numbers represents the following:
One reminds me there is only one Savior. The scriptures John 3:16 and John 14:6 plainly teach this.
Two reminds me there were two criminals who were crucified with the Lord ( Luke 23:33). One was repentant and one was not. Our Lord quickly forgave the one who wanted to be remembered.
Three reminds me of the three crosses ( John 19:17-18). Jesus said: If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me ( Matthew 16:24).
Four reminds me of the four soldiers who were suppose to keep watch during His crucifixion instead of gambling for His clothes ( John 19:23-25). Jesus wants us to stay focused on Him ( John 3:14).
Five reminds me of the five horrible wounds inflicted upon Him. His head, His back, His hands, His feet, and lastly His side were injured. It is these wounds suffered by Him that heal us ( Isaiah 53:5).
Six reminds me of the six hours He was upon the cross ( Mark 15:25, 33). For three of these hours there was daylight and for the last three there was darkness upon all the land ( Matthew 27:45). We must use the time we have been given to serve Him while we are able.
Seven reminds me of the seven sayings of Jesus while He was on the cross. The first three are spoken to others showing His love for them. One is an outcry to His Father. The last three are directed to His needs. They are found in the following verses:
Luke 23:34 He prays for His enemies.
Luke 23:43 He forgives the penitent thief.
John 19-26-27 He wants His mother taken care of by John.
Matthew 27:46 He quotes the first verse of Psalms 22.
John 19:28 He thirsts.
John 19:30 He said His work is finished.
Luke 23:46 He commits His spirit to God, the Father.
These seven things have been a big help to me in remembering our Lords death during the partaking of His supper. May they also be a help to others.
