Appropriate Dress

ELDERSSTATEMENT AS TO APPROPRIATE DRESS FOR WORSHIP SERVICES AND BIBLE CLASSES

This article was read publicly to the congregation by an elder and published in the Messenger in 1994. The elders met Sunday, August 6, 2006 and discussed this topic again. It was agreed upon to publish this article again.

Cooperation is one of the hallmarks of the Mt. Juliet church of Christ. Throughout the year when help has been requested, the response has been overwhelming. Today, the elders of this congregation ask that you consider seriously the following comments, as we once again seek your support and cooperation.
We are concerned about some of our members manner of dress. Quickly let us add that while we cannot mandate what anyone wearsnor do we intend to trywe do feel morally bound to discuss this subject.
It has been brought to our attention, and some of us have even observed first-hand, that inappropriate clothing is being worn at the various services of the church. Specifically, let us mention the practice of wearing shorts by both men and women, and of wearing low-cut or back-less dresses by some of our women.
Young people, we know you experience pressure to be like and to dress like your friends. Today we ask that you hear us and that you support our request by clothing yourselves in a way that would be appropriate if Jesus were to sit beside you in the flesh. Remember, the Bible says Christ is in our midst each time we come together.
Likewise parents, we seek your support in this endeavor. When you go home today, please discuss this issue objectively with your family. In no way are the elders suggesting that we, as a congregation, make a fashion statement. Certainly, the elders would never presume to pass judgment on the quality of clothing worn by any of our brothers or sisters. We merely suggest that all present themselves decently before God, in an effort to make our assembly more conducive to worship.
The elders believe there is an age at which shorts become inappropriate dress in the context of a worship service or Bible class. If you wish to discuss this point with us we will gladly do so in a private, confidential conversation.
Brethren, you have approved eight men who serve this congregation as your elders. Leaders are of little effect without loyal, supportive followers. As your leaders, we ask you to consider this request prayerfully, with reflection on the way a Christian should dress when coming to services. We solicit your support and cooperation. On behalf of the elders, thank you.
