The Tongue - Satan's or God's Tool?

by Ivie Powell

Someone has said "We have a barometer to measure almospheric pressure, a thermometer to measure temperature, a speedometer to measure velocity, but the oldest measuring instrument that reveals the depts of one's soul and measures his character is the tongue!"

Indeed, the tongue, though small, can do untold damage or good for the cause of Christ. With it we can destroy another's influence or with it we can soothe broken hearts, sing praises unto God, pray, tell others of the saving message of Christ and in general edify the body of Christ.

The servant of old wrote, "Whosoever keepth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from trouble." ( Proverbs 21:23). Again we read, "Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips." (Psalms 141:3).

Before engaging in gossip, read carefully James 3 and remember the old adage that bears repeating. "He that listens and he that gossips out both be hung. The one by the ear, the other by the tongue!"

May we be a mouth piece for the glory of God and not Satan's tool of destruction!
