When Faith Falters

by Pat Hackney

Even in the lives of some of the most devout and spiritual men who ever lived, faith sometimes faltered

Some of the classic examples of faltering faith in the Bible:
1. Elijah, 1 Kings 19.
2. John the Baptist, Matthew 11:2-3
3. Peter, Mark 14:66-72.

From these examples we see that God has used imperfect human beings to accomplish His purpose. He continues to use imperfect people today. In our world of sin and materialism a person must be careful. It is easy to become diverted from the Lord. It is very unfortunate that some people cannot experience disappointment and humiliation, and even failure, without giving up entirely. Sometimes too much prosperity can also cause us to fall away.
So, how do we keep our faith from faltering? The apostle Paul says we must work out our own salvation ( Philippians 2:12). We must be willing to do the following and the Lord will bless and strengthen us:

1. We need to increase in the knowlerge of God's word ( Philippians 3:9-10).
2. We need to keep the flame of prayer lit ( Philippians 4:6-7).
3. We need to put our trust in God anp lean not on our own understanding ( Proverbs 3:5).
4. We need to lay aside every weight and sin that ensnares us and look to Jesus in order to be strengthened ( Hebrews 12: 1-2).
