The Awesome God

by Tony Huddleston

Sometimes it's good to reflect on the characteristics and nature of the God we serve. As in the song we sing, our God is truly an awesome God! Thescriptures teach us to fear God; (meaning to hold him in reverence), Revelation 14:6-7; 2 Corinthians 7:1, and the more we understand about God, the more we can appreciate what fearing God really means. Consider.the attributes of God:

Omnipotence - The power of God is truly beyond our full comprehension. In six days, God created the universe and all life therein ( Genesis 1). The more we learn of the universe, the more we understand of the incredible vastness and the innumerable hosts of stars, galaxies, and "other wonders that are there. Before the telescope was invented; there were thought to be around 2000 stars in the heavens. It is now known that there are not only millions of stars, but millions of galaxies, each filled with millions of stars.

Omniscience - The knowledge of God far surpasses the knowledge of man ( Proverbs 2:5-6). Consider the secrets of life itself. Although science has made great advances in understanding the elements of life, they have only scratched the surface in its understanding. Only God understands and only God can create life. The simplest forms of life exhibit incredible complexity and structure.

Omnipresence - The all encompassing presence of God is one of the most difficult concepts to understand. God is here and He is everywhere; He has always been and He always will be (see Genesis 21:33). In Jonah 1:3, the prophet Jonah tried in vain to leave the presence of God. God is not confined by time or space. Psalms 90:2 affirms, "Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God. "
When we try in our own limited way to understand something of the God we serve, we must remember that this almighty God, who made the heavens and the earth, is also a God of love. God knew that it would be difficult for us to understand him so he sent his son Jesus Christ to the earth to live and to die for us that we might come to know the true nature of the Father. Jesus said to Philip in John 14:9 "...he that hath seen me hath seen the Father... ". Let us come to know God through his Son and our Savior, Jesus Christ.
