Anorexia Nervosa

by Bud Lambert

One of the characteristics of godly love is recognizing the needs of others ( Luke 10:25-37). Here is some information about Anorexia Nervosa that can help us love those who are suffering with this eating disorder.
Anorexia Nervosa is a lifethreatening disorder, characterized by selfstarvation with significant weight loss. 90% of cases of Anorexia Nervosa occur in young women, with the onset of the illness in the early to late teens.
Physical warning signs include weight loss resulting in body weight 15% below normal; absence ofthree consecutive menstrual periods; intolerance to cold and feeling cold all the time; low pulse rate; constipation; and abnormal growth of fine hair on the shoulders, back, uppers arms, and thighs.
Psychological warning signs include disturbed body image (believing you are fat when you may actually be underweight); intense fear of weight gain; low self-esteem; perfectionism; withdrawal from others; and depression.
Health risks associated with Anorexia Nervosa are irregular heart beat; abnormally low blood pressure; electrolyte dehydration; heart failure; kidney stones; kidney failure; osteoporosis (bones prone to fractures); and high suicide risk.
If Anorexia Nervosa is suspected, immediate medical attention is required; hospitalization may be needed. There is nothing shameful about having an eating disorder. It is important not to be afraid to seek help if you think that you have the signs and symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa. A first step might be to talk with your parent or guardians. You might also seek the advice of your doctor, school nurse or counselor. If you know someone who has the signs and symptoms, encoqrage them to seek help.
