Isaiah 66:16 "For by fire and by His sword the Lord will judge all flesh; and the slain of the Lord shall be many. "
The sword has been a mighty weapon of war for centuries. It is easy therefore to understand why the sword is used in so many examples of scriptures. Few things have existed with man so long that have had the power to hurt or damage as the sword. The only real comparison for our purposes would be the words of man.
How often we use our words carelessly! How often we use our words to hurt, get even, prove a point, or in many other ways that are not as our Lord would have us behave.
Ephesians 6, speaks of putting on the armor of God. Verse 18 says, "And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. "
If as we have seen, our words can be as swords; let us be more cautious in their use. Let us speak with the mind of Christ, considering others before ourselves. Let us use wholesome words in our speech and properly use the sword as a part of the armor God has granted us.
