What Does God Say About Spanking?

It Saves the Soul!

by David Shannon Loving Parents Spank: Proverbs 13:24 "He who spares his rod hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines him diligently." God equates spanking with love. God equates spanking with diligent discipline. Can Spanking, which is Painful, produce Anything Good? Proverbs 23: 13-14 "Do not hold back discipline from the child, Although you beat him with the rod, he will not die. You shall beat him with the rod, And deliver his soul from Sheol." God informs that spanking will not kill a child. God informs that it might save his soul from dying! Spanking and ''the talk": Proverbs 29:15,17 "The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child who gets his own way brings shame to his mother. Correct your son, and he will give you comfort; He will also delight your soul." God links the rod of correction with the words of correction. God links a spoiled child with parents that suffer shame. Comments: The challenge of parenting is great. Parents' responsibility carries the weight of eternity! We must not look to how we feel, how others discipline, or how we were disciplined ourselves, instead let us follow God! The word "disciple" means "learner or pupil; to teach one to follow the teaching and the teacher." The word "discipline" involves instruction, example and correction. Let us help our children grow into disciples of Jesus by our discipline! Principles of Discipline: 1. Be an Example of What You Intend to Teach - 1 Timothy 4: 12 2. Demonstrate Love before Correction 3. Train Child to Seek Your Approval & to Delight in God's Wisdom 4. Establish Goals and Limitations Hebrews 12:8 5. Clarify Consequences of Disobedience First Offence: 1. Get alone with the child 2. Clarify Instructions (was it understood) 3. Convey Grief (eye to eye) 4. Give only one warning 5. Be Prepared to follow through on discipline Second Offence: 1. Act "in the day you hear of it" Numbers 30:5 2. Get alone for confrontation 3. Establish Personal responsibility Ask: What did you do? (require them to state it) 4. Appeal to their conscience 5. Emphasize responsibility to God 6. Reflect grief 7. Associate correction with Love Hebrews 12:6 8. Win their will without breaking their spirit Hebrews 12:5 9. Know the causes of a broken spirit Anger, inconsistency, or injustice by parents
