The Blessing of Youth
by Tony Huddleston
"Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity." 1 Timothy 4:12
What a wonderful thing it is to be young! I want to encourage all of our young people to appreciate their youth, and to use it for God's glory. There are certain attributes especially prevalent among young people.
Strength - The young are strong in physical strength and dexterity. This attribute can be used mightily in the Lord's kingdom. More important than physical strength is spiritual strength. John talks about a young man who was strong spiritually, and able to overcome the wicked one. ( 1 John 2:13-14)
Zeal -The young tend to be enthusiastic. When this zeal is directed
properly, great things can be done for the Lord. An excellent example is the young man Saul, who was very zealous against the church until he learned about Jesus. ( Acts 7:58 - 8:3). He later became the great apostle Paul, and used that zeal to preach the gospel throughout the world.
Intellect - Young people have a great capacity for learning and development of the mind. There is a tendency among young people to accept difficult challenges and to believe their goals are attainable. Developing proper ideas based on truth is of utmost importance at this time of their lives. The king's criteria for selecting Daniel for the king's palace was in part his knowledge and wisdom. ( Daniel 1:4)
The attributes I've referred to can be wonderful blessings, and bring great happiness and fulfillment when directed toward God. The same attributes can be dangerous when used for self only and worldliness. I pray that all our youth receive the blessings God intended by resolving to use those gifts for Him.
