It is basic human nature to be concerned about providing for the material things in life. Those who trust in God know there is a better way to live. In Luke 12: 16-21, Jesus tells a parable about a rich man who was a very successful farmer. His barns were filled to overflowing with the harvest. However, he failed to appreciate and be thankful for the success God had given him. He seemed to be concerned only with retirement to a life of ease and pleasure. Jesus described this man as
foolish, as he was not to live to enjoy the pleasures he had envisioned.
Jesus follows this parable with a very important lesson on providence. In Luke 12: 22, Jesus says to his disciples, "... Therefore I say unto you, take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on." Providence means simply, "making provisions for the future", and God provides all our needs, if we follow Him.
God provides for the nourishment and growth of our bodies. Even the ravens are fed, though they have no storehouse or barn. ( Luke 12:24). Jesus describes it to be a small thing for God to add a cubit to one's height, but our own power is so limited in comparison. Jesus wants us to rely on God and not ourselves.
God provides our clothing and shelter. Jesus describes the lilies of the field as being clothed with beauty greater than that of Solomon's glory. ( Luke 12:27).
It is good for all of us to examine our own priorities from time to time. Is our desire great wealth, a life of pleasure, a retirement of ease and self gratification? If we're not careful, we'll make the same mistake as the rich farmer. The only true way to happiness is to quit worrying about material things, trust in the providence of God, and work with zeal in His vineyard.
