The Sovereignty of God
by Tony Huddleston

Daniel 4:17
With all the turmoil in the world, the question may arise: Is God really in control? Daniel the prophet gave the answer when he interpreted a dream for Nebuchadnezzar.
"This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men". Daniel 4:17.
God exercises total sovereignty over all the kingdoms of the world. The rulers of our day are in power only because God is using them for His purpose. Why is this important to Christians?
God has shown throughout biblical history that governments and nations who obey God are blessed, and those who do not are punished. "Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people". Proverbs 14:34.
How can we exalt our own nation, and help return it to God? One person can't do it, but each of us together can make a difference. We can:
1. Pray for our nation and our leaders. Abraham prayed to God in behalf of the city of Sodom. God was longsuffering and would have saved the city for only ten righteous persons. Genesis 18:32.
2. When we sin, repent and re-dedicate our lives to the Lord. This action saved the great Assyrian city of Ninevah in the days of Jonah. "And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not".
3. Work within the laws of the land to effect change by voting for and supporting candidates who will lead us in the right way. Esther saved her people by going to the king in a lawful manner and making her request. Esther 5:2-3. However, violation of civil law is not the right way. Romans 13:1.
Will America continue to be a great and powerful nation? We don't
know, but we do know God is in control, and He will not forsake us if we
promote righteousness and stand against evil.
