Friends Day

by James Whiteaker

The story of the Good Samaritan tells us whom to consider as our neighbors. Romans 19:19 tells us to "Love thy neighbor as thyself". The Adam Clarke commentaries explain the old Jewish Law in Leviticus 19:15-18 as "Any person you know, who lives nearby or who passes near you is your neighbor while within your reach". For those of you who have moved or had neighbors move, you know they do not stay within our reach long. Opportunities often come but for a short time There are many people who fall within Clarke's definition for each of us. There is one who is waiting for you.

Friends and Neighbors Day is this Sunday. A lot of plans and actions have been in the process for many weeks. It is a unique opportunity for each of us to show that we truly care. It is a time we have set aside to worship our God and share a meal with people we know and thus be a friend of Christ. Scriptures abound for our treatment of friends and neighbors. "So then as we have opportunity, let us do good toward all men", Galatians 6:10. "Let each one of us please his neighbor for that which is good unto edifying" Romans 15:2. "A man who has friends must himself be friendly" Proverbs 18:24. Let us be especially friendly this Sunday. We may meet brothers who worship with us every Sunday thinking them guests as well as those who are truly guests. Christ tells us that we are His friends if we do what He commands John 15:14.

"Love worketh no ill to his neighbor, love
therefore is the fulfillment of the law."
Romans 13:10.
