Noah's Ark and the Great Flood

Noah's Ark

Part 1

"Then the ark rested in the seventh month, the seventeenth day of the month, on the mountains of Ararat" (Gen. 8:4, NKJV).
Was there a great ark, built by the Patriarch Noah? Was the world destroyed by a mammoth, worldwide flood? Did all the animals the Bible mentions come aboard the ark? Was the ark large enough to accommodate them?
Where did all the water come from to flood the earth? Did early man have the technology to have built a huge vessel like the ark? What was "gopher" wood?
Could the animals have been cared for on the ark? Would there be enough room for the animals, the food, the provisions, and Noah, his wife, their three sons and their wives?
Is there any evidence as the ark's existence today? If so, is it on the mountains of Ararat as the Bible says? In light of the biblical claims, how can one explain the fossil record? How can one explain the great ice age? How can on explain pillow lava and fish fossils on the tops of mountains?
These are just some of the questions people ask about the episode of the Great Flood. I'm convinced the weight of scientific, archaeological, and historical data support the record Moses left us. I believe there was a great worldwide flood, that Noah rescued the designated animals and his family on the ark, and that we imitate the faith of Noah when we are baptized ( 1 Peter 3:21)!
The ark itself was huge. The Bible says it was 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. The length of the cubit among the ancients ranges from 17.5 to 26 inches. The average "royal" cubit of the Egyptians, Assyrians, Chaldeans, and Babylonians was 20.7 inches.
If the cubit was conservatively taken to be 18 inches, the ark would be 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high. Such a vessel would contain 1,500,000 cubic feet! This is the equivalent cubic feet of 550 cattle cars!
Noah's cubit may have been as much as 24 inches. If so, the ark would have been 600 feet long, 100 feet wide, and 60 feet high. This would have the cubic feet of 1,342 cattle cars!
Even so, critics claim a fleet of arks could not have carried all the animals the Bible claims. This claim is false! The ark was easily large enough to get the job done. We will talk about this next week!

"By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith" ( Hebrews 11:7, NKJV) .
Even though the ark was enormous (see last week's article), critics have claimed the ark could never have held all the innumerable millions upon millions of animalcules. These criticisms are invalid as the ark had ample room for the animals, supplies, food, provisions, and Noah and his family.
Keep in mind that a species is not the same as a "kind." A "kind" in the Bible was any animal or plant which could reproduce. Therefore, all dogs, wolves, coyotes, jackals, and dingoes needed to have only one pair to represent them on the ark. Many fewer "kinds" were needed on the ark than "species."
Furthermore, all breeds of fish, and animals that could survive in the water would not have been brought aboard the ark. In species, the maximum number of vertebrate animals, including mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians is 17,600. A pair of each, plus extras for the "clean" ones makes a maximum number of 35,000 species necessary on the ark.
The average size of these animals is about the size of a cat. While some animals, like an elephant, were huge, many were microscopic, smaller than a flea. Further, these animals would not need to reproduce until an entire year had past. Therefore, many baby animals could have been among the number. These would take-up less space, eat far less, and not be as dangerous to other animals and people.
The animals, due to the darkness of the storm above, and the ark's one window (Gen. 6:16), would have been in hibernation during much of the time. Hence, the need for food and care would be minimal. Noah and his family, therefore, would have been easily capable of caring for them.
Botanists estimate that the equivalent of 100 cattle cars would be needed to house all these animals. The ark, even at the lowest estimates, would be equivalent to 550 cattle cars! The ark had three decks (Gen. 6:16), which utilized the cubic feet very efficiently.
The ark was large enough! Could ancient man have built such a vessel? More next week.

Make yourself an ark of gopher wood; make rooms in the ark, and c9ver it. inside and. outside with pitch...This Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did" (Gen. 6:14, 22, NKJV).'"
Critics claim that Noah and his three sons could not possibly have built the ark. They claim that they did not:' (l} "have the technology; (2) have the manpower. Let's examine these criticisms.
Technology. "Noah's technology was God-given! God gave Noah the instruction on how to build the ark (Gen. 6:14-22). Moses shares with us just the highlights. Therefore, the ark would have been made by the most brilliant of architects!' E
'"Furthermore, ancient man did some remarkable things. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon reached some 397 "'stories into the Chaldean skies. The pyramids of Egypt are to this day; a masterpiece of engineering. The city of Babylon, according to' Herodotus, was surrounded. by a wall 55 miles in circumference, with the outer wall so thick, three Chariots could tide across, its top side by side!
Archaeology has shown ancient man was proficient in electroplating, sewers running water, air conditioning, and even batteries! But, most of all, Noah had divine instruction, and thus technology to build the ark was no problem.
Manpower. Could Noah and his three sons have built the ark by themselves? Indeed, the manpower to build the ark was plausible.
First, Noah and his sons had perhaps 100 years to build the ark. The Bible says Noah was 500 years old
where he begot Shem, Ham, and Japheth (Gen. 5:32). The flood, came in the 600th year of Noah's life (Gen. 6:11). God warns that the world only had a 120 respite before the judgment caltie against it (Gen. 6:3). So, there was time for the construction over these many years.
Second, a chief (Patriarch) like Noah could have hired help. Perhaps laborers "'were hired until his boys were old enough to am in the building, and even beyond.
Even if no one was hired, the large expanse of time, with divine technology, would certainly have been ample to do this job. The manpower was no problem.
On the slopes of Mt. Ararat, there is a wooden object at about the 14,000 foot level There is not a forest within 300 miles of this mountain. Satellite photography shows it to be huge. What is it? More next week.

"Then the ark rested in the seventh month, the seventeenth day of the month, on the mountains of Ararat" (Gen. 8:4, NKJV).
Mt. Ararat, bordering between eastern Turkey and the former Soviet Empire, is a huge snowcapped mountain nearly 17,000 feet high. Many expeditions have made their way on Mt. Ararat, trying to find the ark.
By the way, "mountains of Ararat" is correct, because there are two peaks, one called little Ararat and the major summit under discussion. The Bible is an amazing book!
The first modem expedition that spotted the ark was French explorer Ferdinand Navarro, who in the summer' of 1955, climbed Mt. Ararat. Navarro and his young son took actual footage of their expedition, which is spectacular. Navarro brought back a beam from the vessel which he took and had analyzed.
The wood was extremely dense and heavy, and dated about 5,000 years, clearly in line with the Bible's description of the great flood.
Many expeditions have climbed the mountain, and have failed to spot the ark. Navarro point so that glacial ice covers the ark most of the time and only very warm of glacial melt back can it be seen. Hence, some may walk right over the top of it, and never see it.
The late James Erwin, a former astronaut, took an airplane expedition of Mt. Ararat. He took an amazing photograph just above the huge Ahora Gorge. Clearly, sticking-out of the ice during this very warm summer, there is a huge wooden, man-made object.
The French Satellite, Spot, has taken reconnaissance photography of Mt. Ararat, above the Ahora Gorge. A Boston firm, called Task, has analyzed the photos, and is convinced of something huge and manmade under the glacial ice. Dr. Carl Baugh confirms that the spectrographic images indicate this object is made out of wood!
Mike Holman, who works at Task, confirms the object has been broken into three pieces by the enormous earthquake that created the Ahora Gorge in the 19th century. He indicates the object, as photographed by Spot, is about 80 feet wide (50 cubits). He confirms the object is made of wood.
How could such an enormous vessel have gotten to the 14,000 foot level of Mt. Ararat? How could it be made of wood without a forest within 300 miles of the mountain?
Pillow lava and fish fossils reveal that Mr. Ararat was at one time under water! As Moses reveals, the ark came to rest "on the mountains of Ararat." The Noah episode is factual! The Bible is the word of God!

The Great Flood

Part 1

by Steve Hale

"...on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened" (Gen. 7:11, NKJV).
Dr. Walter Brown, a renown Professor Emeritus of Physics, believes he has found the origin for the "ice age," the fossil record, coal and oil deposits, the great oceanic
ridges, huge mountains, valleys, canyons, and lakes. Dr. Brown, who worked for years at the Pentagon, calls it "the Hydroplate Theory." We commonly call it "Noah's Flood."
Dr. Brown, along with other scientists, believes the pre-flood earth was one super continent. About onehalf of the water in our oceans now was under this continent, in interconnecting, subterreanean chambers about 10 miles deep. The crust came under increasing pressure, much like a balloon with too much air.
A microscopic crack grew, at about 3 miles per second in both directions, and went the entire circumference of the earth in about 2 hours. The water, with 10 miles of earth pressing on it, burst out at supersonic speed, hurtling 20 miles into the atmosphere. The energy this produced was equivalent to 10 billion hydrogen bombs! This height produced ice crystals, which quickly produced huge ice dumps, called the "ice age."
The earth, where the water jettisoned, buckled-up the pressure release, producing the famous oceanic ridges. Today, huge oceanic ridges circle the earth like the seams on a baseball. Dr. Brown believes this is where "all the fountains of the great deep were broken up." This explains the "ice age," the fossil record, and the frozen mammoths and other frozen animals.
This, along with the "waters which above the firmament" (Gen. 1:7) explains how water covered the highest mountains by fifteen cubits (Gen. 7: 19, 20). This is how "the windows of heaven were opened" (Gen. 7:11).
The ridge moving upward, along with the water sliding underneath the plates caused them to slide at a top speed of about 45 miles per hour. When they met resistance from other plates, the earth buckled, causing
mountain chains and huge valleys. This why the mountain chains are parallel to the oceanic ridges from which they slid! Water settled in earth depressions causing many post-f1ood lakes. The earth's topography and atmosphere were dramatically altered, perhaps explaining the extinction of ancient animals like the dinosaur.
So, "...all that was on the dry land, died" (Gen. 7:22). How then, do we explain the existence of human and animal life today? Only if God provided a means of escape could we continue to exist.
Dr. Brown's "Hydro pI ate Theory" matches the biblical description in every detail. It explains the
necessity of God's deliverance so life could continue. The "evidence indicates this Grear Flood took place!

Part 2

by Steve Hale

"And in the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dried, Then God spoke to Noah, saying, 'Go out of the. ark, you and your wife, and' your sons and your sons' wives with you'" (Gen. 8:14-16, NKJV) .
Altogether, Noah and
his family were in the ark for 375 days (Gen. 7:11; 8:14-16). All life on the land and in the sky had been wiped-out (Gen. 7:21-23). Only the eight persons in the ark, and the animals they had taken with them survived the mighty flood. God would not be mocked, and cleansed the earth of its wickedness (Gen. 6:5-7).
The first time it rained was during the Great Flood (Gen. 7:12). Up to that point, the earth was watered differently: "...For the LORD God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground; but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground" (Gen. 2:5b-6). This was no doubt due to the great amount of water under the earth, and the canopy of water above (Gen. 1:7; 2:6).
It must have been a shock to the world inhabitants to see the rain! They should have listened to Noah's preaching sooner ( 2 Peter 2:5) as God in His longsufferring waited for the people to repent ( 1 Peter 3:20, 21). Can you imagine preaching for perhaps 120 years (Gen. 6:3), yet no one is convinced?
It was not left to Noah to keep the wicked masses away, for the Bible says "...the LORD shut him in" (Gen. 7:16). After the flood, the LORD set His rainbow in the sky as the sign of His promise never to destroy the world by water again (Gen. 9:11-17).
The biblical account of the flood is correct in every way (see last week's article). What lessons can we learn? Note the following:

1. Even God's patience can be exhausted ( 2 Peter 3:9-13; Gen 6:5-7).
2. The return of Jesus will be just like the days of Noah ( Matthew 24:36-39).
3. To be saved, we must trust the Lord like Noah did ( 1 Peter 3:20, 21).

The Great Flood's evidence is all around us! Coal and oil deposits, the fossil record, the "ice age," great canyons and mountains, the oceanic ridges, and Mt. Ararat are screaming that this happened! Just as suddenly, Jesus is coming. Are you ready?
