Say the Word

by James Whiteaker

In movies and books we often hear the phrase "just say the word". The listener wanting to carry out some action or other endeavor is waiting for the words. The action will not begin until the words are spoken to start everything in motion. Many of you have played baseball or have children that play. I remember when the boys played or when I umpired a game, it brought a chill to hear the words "PLAY BALL!" I still get a chill thinking of these times. Words are important to us. The scriptures speak of the tongue as a powerful instrument for good or ill ( James 3:4-10).
Each of us know many good people. Folks that we would describe as having a good heart. What do your friends, coworkers, or those within your realm of influence think of you? Hopefully, they think you have a good heart. But is that enough for a Christian? Matthew 10:32 says, "Every one therefore who shall confess Me before men, him will I also confess before My Father who is in heaven" (See also Romans 10:9-10). It is indeed how we live, but also what we say to the world that determines who we belong to. It is intimidating to talk about Jesus away from our brethren. It was that way for the early believers of Jesus. John 12:42 "Nevertheless even of the rulers many believed on Him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess it, lest they should be put out of the synagogue." What do you confess? 1 John 4:15 "Jesus is the Son of God", Philippians 2:11 "Jesus is Lord." To say the words, "I believe that Jesus is the Son of God and Jesus is Lord," are empowering. It is difficult to sin after saying to those around you that Jesus is the Son of God. Saying the words Jesus is Lord will keep those who would tempt you away. You can be good, you can be a true friend, and you can be a hard worker, but the world needs to know why you are those things and that your hope lies in Jesus and not what you accomplish. I believe that Jesus is the Son of God. Say the words. Jesus is the Son of God. Imagine Jesus telling God, James is a child of mine. Say the word!
