The Dangers of Evil
by Albert England
Everyone is tempted to do evil. We must learn to recognize evil and the best way to overcome temptation. The sad mistake that many make is thinking they are strong enough to remain in the midst of temptation and resist it. In the Old Testament God required Israel to remove evil from their midst (Deutoronomy 21:21). One way to do this is to remove anything from your surroundings that tempts you to sin. Do not remain in a situation where you are in danger of being overcome with evil. Never assume that you alone are able to resist evil. Satan's influence is very powerful.
God does not like evil. It was evil that caused the death of His Son. Sin causes much hardship, unhappiness, problems, and destroys relationships with God and one another. A good and honest evaluation of one's life will reveal temptations that should be removed, such as some forms of entertainment or ungodly relationships.
There may be times when you are powerless in removing ungodly influences. At such times, remove yourself from temptation. Paul instructed Christians to avoid every form of evil (I Thes. 5:22). When Joseph was enticed by Potiphar's wife to commit sin, he fled immediately (Gen. 39:12).
A life of sin will separate one from Good. III John 11 says "Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who does good is of God, but he who does evil has not seen God." Be strong to avoid any form of temptation in your mind, to your home, in your relationships with others and above all in your relationship with God. According to James we sin when we are drawn away by our own lust, but God provides a way of escape from every temptation ( I Corinthians 10:13).
