The Power of the Pulpit

by David Shannon

We can never expect our government or society to set higher moral standards than what is spoken from our pulpits! Recently we have seen some of the leaders in the religious community bluntly defy the word of God in the topics of homosexuality and marriage. For example:

Religion Today's feature story one day this week began; "Weeks after Canadian high courts ruled to allow same-sex marriage in two provinces, delegates from Canada's largest Protestant community passed a motion calling on the federal government to endorse same-sex marriage throughout the country.
The 38th General Council of the United Church of Canada, representing Methodists, Presbyterians and the Congregational Union of Canada, passed the motion after just 45 minutes of debate at its annual conference in Nova Scotia last week."

Never has there been a time where government has stood on a higher plan morally than our religions. Many religious pulpits stopped preaching against homosexuality years ago! Now it is being accepted. Ironically, what does God say will save them?

"How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?" Romans 10:14

The same source which lost the battle, the pulpits, I believe will be the same source which can change the wayward digression. The big worldly city of Corinth was entered by a preacher named Paul who preached Jesus. They believed. "..homosexuals... sodomites... And such WERE some of you. But you were washed, ... sanctified...justified in the name of the Lord" I Corinthians 6:9-10.

Paul had a type of grass roots movement in the cause of Christ! Let's be a part of a grass root movement for people to live for Jesus today. Don't stand idly by watching others decay in immorality. Instead invite them to worship and classes. Let's be so evangelistic we will always be able to say, "and such were some of you." Giving folks the opportunity to learn of Christ changes lives and ultimately the world, one soul at a time. Who will you invite this week? Let's do it!
