Dress in Worship Revisited
by Pat Hackney
In the Old Testament the priests were told by God how they were to dress in worship to Him. The entire chapter of Exodus 28 deals with this issue. The high priest's dress represented his function as mediator between God and the people. The high priest was responsible for seeing the duties of all the priests were carried out.
Under the New Testament Jesus is our high priest and mediator ( Hebrews 5:10) & ( 1 Timothy 2:5). Today, Christians are a royal priesthood ( 1 Peter 2:9). Brothers and sisters when we come to worship God, Jesus, our high priest, expects us to be appropriately dressed. We should not come in His presence wearing shorts or any other provocative clothing.
In the 14th chapter of 1 Corinthians the apostle Paul writes to the church at Corinth and tells them how they are to conduct themselves in public worship ( 1 Corinthians 14:26-40). He concludes by stating: "Let all things be done decently and in order."
It is true we no longer have to wear special robes, crowns, breastplates, or ephods. However, God does expect us to have chaste conduct accompanied by respect for Him, which is very precious in His sight ( I Peter 3:2-4). May we all attempt to be pleasing in His sight.
