The Bible is the most popular book in all history. It is the best selling book in the world. The reason the book is so great is that it is the word of God.
There are two thoughts we should give attention to as we read the Bible. What is the purpose of the Bible and how do I study the Bible? Reflecting on these two ideas will improve our Bible study.
What is the purpose of the Bible? Paul answers this question in 2 Timothy 3:15 "and that from childhood you have known the Holy scriptures which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus." The purpose of God's word—salvation. God's purpose is to get His children home. His book, the Bible, outlines His plan and desire to save His children.
The Bible answers some very difficult questions about life: How does life originate? Where do I go after death? How can I know there is a God? What is the purpose of life on this earth? It is the guide or manual that leads to eternal life.
How do we study the Bible? How can we make it a real, active, and living power in our lives? Jesus answers this question in Matthew 7:7 "Ask and it will be given to you: seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you." This is a great promise. Then in James 1:5 "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God..." We need God's help in understanding the Bible. We should read prayerfully. Do not read to prove your thoughts or be quick to accept man's ideas, but search for His truth.
Anything worthwhile requires effort. And studying the Bible is no exception. But the effort we put into it will enrich our lives and increase our love and appreciation for God and His word. It will make a difference in our lives.
"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled." Matthew 5:6.
