They Had All Things in Common

by Dewayne Griffin

It is truly amazing how God's Word is timeless and ever new. Each time we read and study it becomes more relevant. In Acts 2:44-45, we are told that the new converts had all things common, sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. They suddenly found themselves a part of something more important than their own individual wishes and desires. I think we continue to see that same type of cooperative spirit in the church today. I was recently apprised of an act of love and concern rendered by a Bible class made up of young professionals and graduate students. One of the families in the class had experienced poor health and loss of employment. Their healthcare benefits had been exhausted and they needed immediate help. The class came together before the Sunday evening service to pray and take up a collection. Through the efforts of the class a gift of more than five thousand dollars was given. Opportunities like this enable us to practice true Christianity and I encourage us to seek similar opportunities. This story speaks loudly from God's Word that we are to bear one another's burdens. It is also an example of a Bible class that had all things common. God be praised for the action of the class.
