Driving the Getaway Car

by David Fleming

I remember from an old movie how a man was induced by his friend to help commit a crime. The friend told him he "really" wouldn't be involved. After all, he was just driving the getaway car. Time passed, they were caught, they were equally sentenced and the one man said, "but I was only driving the getaway car!"

In Acts 7, we read of Stephen and the results of his defense of the Gospel. In verses 57 & 58 we read of the people showing their hate of his message and stoning him. The end of verse 58 says " they laid their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul." Was Saul as guilty as they? He only stood there. In chapter 8, verse 1, it says: "Now Saul was consenting to his death." You could say he was "driving the getaway car."

How many times do we as Christians stray so close to sin that we may not "appear" to be directly involved, but like Paul, we are close by giving our consent?

Let's not get caught "driving the getaway car." Let us choose to avoid the opportunities of sin. Let us "abstain from every form of evil" (I Thess 5:22). And like Paul, "press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus" (Phil 3:14).
