Worries

by Albert England

As we grow older one of the needs we have is the confidence and assurance that our daily needs will be provided. In Matthew 6:25-34 Jesus assures us that He will love and take care of us. In these verses Christ gives four reasons as to how we can know He will provide for our well-being. In vs. 25 "Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?"
First Jesus says that life is more than food and the body more than clothing. God gives life and He created the body. I Corinthians 6: 19, 20 "What know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: Therefore glorify God in your body, and in your Spirit which are God's." Life and the body are more than food and clothing.
Second Jesus says to consider or look at the birds of the air. Vs. 26 "Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them." The question is raised, "Are you not of more value than they?" In Acts 14:17 the loving care of the Father is shown; "He did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness." If we are filled with gladness, there is no worry or anxiety.
Third Jesus asked a question in vs. 27. "Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?" Whether this is speaking of height or length of days, God is in control. In Acts 17:26 God made us to dwell on the earth, "and hath determined the times before appointed and the bounds of their habitation." In the next verse He tells our purpose upon this earth is to live for Him. God is the One who created the body and His power works daily in the body. Each breath, each heartbeat, and each function of the body takes place as a result of God's continual working in the body. If God takes care of the birds and we are of greater value, He will do so much more for you and me.
Fourth Jesus says look at the lilies of the field. Vs. 28 : "So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field: how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these." Solomon was the richest king, dressed in purple and fine clothing, but God says that Solomon in all his glory was not dressed like one of the lilies. God's wonderful presence and power continues in our daily lives. Vs. 30 "Now if God so clothed the grass of the field which today is and tomorrow is thrown in the oven, will He not much more clothe you? O ye of little faith."
Jesus concludes in vs.31-33 "Therefore do not worry: saying What shall we eat? or what shall we drink? or what shall we wear? For all these things the Gentiles seek. For your Heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added to you."
