Cards From Mt. Juliet Make A Difference
by Dewayne Griffin
On any given day the list of sick and those bereaved with connections at the Mt. Juliet church of Christ is lengthy. I think it would be safe to guess there are at least a couple of hundred Get Well and Sympathy cards sent by our members each week. What a wonderful ministry, but one that rarely gets a lot of publicity. Please allow me to share a report that I received from one of the recipients this past week.
Mr. Jim Walden, Gwen Fetzer's father, was visiting with us last Sunday (his visit had something to do with a new grandchild, Zach) and told me that he was alive partially because of the love exhibited by the congregation at Mt. Juliet. Brother Walden, who lives in St. Louis, MO, had heart bypass surgery back in October. If you meet him, he looks like the picture of health and has a wonderful outgoing personality. However, during the time of his illness he became depressed and just about lost the will to live. Jim told me that his wife visited him shortly after he got out of the recovery room bringing a stack of get-well cards; all of them were from Tennessee. In fact, before the cards stopped, 78 of you had sent words of cheer. He told me he wished he could personally tell the congregation how much the cards meant. By your thoughtfulness and concern for the sick God was glorified and Jim Walden was blessed. What a wonderful story.
If you ever have second thoughts about sending cards, just remember, they do make a difference.
Special Announcement: For the past several years Sue and I have been attending a fundraiser for the Nashville Inner City Ministry. This year I will be hosting a table (space for 8 guests) that includes a free Catfish Dinner. There will be a couple of short speeches, a collection will be made, and you will be on your way in less than one hour. The food is great and the funds go for a very worthy cause. Each year the Inner City Ministry reaches thousands of children who would otherwise not know about Jesus. The dinner will be on Friday, March 28, 2003, at 6:30 P.M., at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds. If you are interested in attending, please contact me ASAP. If there is sufficient interest, I will reserve a church van for transportation.
