"Keep Your Feet"
by David Fleming
Some of you who are "Hobbits and J.R.R. Tolkien" reading and movie fans may remember the line from the book, "The Fellowship of the Ring" that says, in part: "It's a dangerous business, going out of your front door, you step into the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no telling where you might be swept off to..."
We are entering a new year, should our lives be thus extended, we shall face the "dangerous business" of stepping out our door. I think it safe to say God expects us to do so. The important thing, I believe for us, is to prepare, as much as possible, for life beyond our door.
Many, and hopefully all of our congregation are participating in studying through the New Testament this year. I hope each of us will be serious in our study so that we will be better prepared to go out of our door.
Often we consider ourselves strong and ready for about anything; but, as the line in the story says, we need to "keep our feet," that is, we must carefully plan our direction or, "there's no telling where you might be swept off to..."
Guard your words, your life, your footsteps, and "Make your calling and election sure."
We each have opportunity for good. Let us look for them carefully and be a good and faithful servant to God in 2003!
