If you discovered you had inherited a million dollars from a rich relative, would it make a difference in the way you live? It would...Dreams go on and on, but let's face reality. We as Christians actually have an inheritance and it is worth infinitely more than a million dollars. In I Peter 1:4, Peter assures the Christians that he has "an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you," Peter also states in vs. 7 that our faith is of greater value than gold which perishes even though it is refined by fire. We can have corruptible goals or we can set our affections on incorruptible goals. I Peter 1:9 says, "...the end of your faith-the salvation of your souls." "Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ." I Peter 1:13.
The Christian has many great and wonderful promises. Romans the eighth chapter describes how Christians are adopted into the family of God and become children of God. Romans 8:17 says, "and if children, then heirs-heirs of God and joint heirs of Christ." Galatians 4:7 "... and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ."
Some families have enough wealth that the children do not apply themselves because they know they have an inheritance. Others are greedy and want their inheritance NOW, not wanting to wait for the time to inherit. Some expect to inherit, but because they do not have the right relationship, they do not inherit. The Christian must continually maintain the right relationship to the Father in order to receive his inheritance. This inheritance will never perish. This knowledge and hope will make a difference in the way we live. Many parents work and prepare inheritances for their children. But the heavenly Father has provided the greatest inheritance for His children. May we continually praise and thank God for our inheritance.
