Waitresses Dread the Sunday Religious Crowd

by David Shannon

That is right, word is that Christians are treated by waitresses more than fraternity guys with a few beers in them. These guys are unpleasant and dreaded, but topping the list are the "Visible Christians."

"The worst, for some reason, are the Visible Christians -- like the ten-person table, all jolly and sanctified after Sunday night service, who run me mercilessly and then leave me $1 on a $92 bill. Or the guy with the crucifixion T-shirt (someone to look up to) who complains that his baked potato is too hard and his iced tea too icy (I cheerfully fix both) and leaves no tip at all. As a general rule, people wearing crosses or WWJD? ("What Would Jesus Do?") buttons look at us disapprovingly no matter what we do, as if they were confusing waitressing with Mary Magdalene's original profession" Barbara Ehrenreich writes in her book "Nickeled and Dimed."

But fortunately that wouldn't happen in Mt. Juliet, or would it? Two weeks ago at you local Cracker-Barrel two women in a stiff, matter-of-fact tone ordered breakfast. As the waitress placed before one lady her order of blueberry pancakes she also set down the bottle of blueberry syrup. The woman forcefully spoke, "Syrup – I need syrup." The waitress kindly replied, "Here is your blueberry syrup, do you want maple syrup instead?" The woman more gruff than before said, "I want syrup." The waitress didn't want the woman to make a scene so she rushed back to the kitchen hoping that maple syrup was what she meant by "I want syrup." The God fearing waitress was greatly disappointed as she returned to the table and had to pause before she delivered the syrup. Her hesitation was to allow the two ladies to finish their prayer. They finished praying and she asked if the maple syrup was what she wanted. The woman never answered or thanked the waitress, but took the syrup and continued as if she were not present.

Before you slight a waiter or waitress of their tip or speak to them like a child or a dog, remember if you belong to Christ your goal is one day for them to sit beside you on Sunday and in eternity. Would you be able to offer an effective invitation to your waiter or would they shake their head and laugh at your hypocrisy?
