Congregation uncorks "church-in-a-bar"

by David Shannon

A church service in a bar? It's happening in Southern California. Dimensions Night Club, a dance spot in Camarillo, becomes holy ground every Sunday night. Patrons can sip a cold one at a barstool or table while taking in the contemporary Christian music....and a short message from a hip pastor."

Preach in a Bar? Yes, Church in a Bar? No!

Paul stated his desire to reach everyone by saying, "I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some." 1 But notice the next sentence, "And this I do for the gospel's sake" 2

Taking the Gospel to a bar would be a great privilege, but being invited back would be almost impossible. Jesus said, "...and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed." 3 Preaching the true gospel of Jesus either separates men from sin or separates the one preaching from the one that won't repent! Paul would not be invited back into that California bar!

Not just Bars, but Other Religions Too!

Remember Paul entering into the synagogues in Acts to teach them the gospel of Jesus? After preaching, some would usually believe and repent. Unbelievers through persecution drove Paul out of their synagogue along with the new converts. Read Acts 17 for examples.

The Gospel Moves People or Sinners Move the One Presenting It!

There has to be a brilliant warning flare in a dark sky when men preach in bars or are invited to denominational worship services time and time again. What are they preaching? The gospel has always caused the people to repent or drive the preacher away! As patrons drank their beer, one Californian summed it well by saying he had, "been looking for something like this for a long time." Not the Gospel, but this!
